A bursa is a thin walled sac-like structure that is located between bone and other adjacent structures such as skin, muscle, ligaments, or tendons. The bursa allows for smooth movement or gliding between these structures where friction would occur if it were not present. Bursitis is the irritation or inflammation of a bursa. Bursitis usually results in pain, tenderness, and limitation of movement of the structures adjacent to it. Fascia is a sheet or band of tissue that lies deep to the skin and forms an investment or compartment for muscles or other body structures. Fasciitis is irritation or inflammation of fascia. This likewise usually results in pain and reduced mobility. A ligament is a band of tissue that connects or supports bones and joints. Ligaments can be over stretched (strained) or partially torn, (sprained) which results in inflammation or irritation of the ligament. This results in pain, tenderness, limitation of motion, and may affect joint stability. Tendinitis is the irritation or inflammation of a tendon. It usually results in pain, tenderness, and limitation of motion.
